A High School Phenom
Hailing from Jackson, Mississippi, Monta Ellis dominated the high school basketball scene, earning the nickname “The Mississippi Bullet” for his speed and scoring ability. As a senior at Lanier High School, he averaged an eye-popping 38.4 points per game and was named USA Today’s High School Player of the Year in 2005. Forgoing college, Ellis entered the NBA Draft, where the Golden State Warriors selected him with the 40th pick in the second round—a steal that would soon pay dividends.

Ellis quickly established himself as one of the most electrifying guards in the league, known for his incredible quickness, acrobatic finishes, and knack for scoring at all three levels. By his second season, Ellis had earned the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award in 2007, averaging 16.5 points per game on a blistering 53.1% shooting.
From 2007 to 2012, Ellis was the centerpiece of the Warriors’ offense, averaging over 20 points per game in five consecutive seasons. His ability to score in isolation and his fearless approach made him a fan favorite. In the 2009-10 season, he averaged a career-high 25.5 points per game, showcasing his elite scoring talent.
Despite his smaller stature (6’3”) and lack of a consistent three-point shot early in his career, Ellis was a relentless attacker who could take over games with his speed and skill.
A Decade of Buckets and Highlights
After leaving Golden State in 2012, Ellis played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Dallas Mavericks, and Indiana Pacers. While his role shifted, his ability to score and create for teammates remained a constant. During his stint with the Mavericks, Ellis helped lead the team to the playoffs, averaging 19 points per game over two seasons.
Ellis retired in 2017 after 12 seasons, finishing his career with an impressive 8,702 field goals made and over 12,000 points scored. Known for his blazing speed, fearless drives to the basket, and countless highlight-worthy moments, Monta Ellis left an indelible mark on the league as one of the most dynamic guards of his era.
